Majors studios have been criticized for their marketing materials following an inappropriate description of children in the film One Life who were rescued from Nazi-occupied territories during World War II. The term « central European » was used to describe the children, which many found to be an attempt to erase their Jewish identity. However, the distributors of the film have now updated the description to recognize that the children were « predominantly Jewish. »

This has sparked controversy and concerns regarding the accuracy and recognition of historical events, as the children rescued from the Nazis were in fact mostly Jewish, and any attempt to erase or downplay this fact has implications for how we understand and remember the historical events of the Holocaust.

Warner Bros and See-Saw Films, the UK distributors of the film, have amended their marketing materials in response to the backlash, clarifying that the children were predominantly Jewish, although they also acknowledged that around 100 of the children were political refugees rather than Jewish.

Furthermore, there is speculation that the controversial term « central European » may have originated from an unauthorized third party on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

The distributors have emphasised that the tragic and violent events of October 7th, when 1,200 Jews were killed by Hamas, did not impact or influence the marketing materials for One Life. They continue to stand by the updated description of the children as predominantly Jewish, which is now the preferred term used by the filmmakers.
Protecting historical accuracy and recognizing the Jewish identity of the children involved in these historical events is of utmost importance.

However, the use of euphemistic terminology to describe these events is a disservice to history and to the memory of those who suffered and lost their lives during the Holocaust. The need for sensitivity and historical accuracy in such matters is essential to prevent the erasure or downplaying of the experiences of those affected by the Holocaust.
