Football hooliganism in a Bulgarian mining town
In the town of Pernik, football matches are not for the faint of heart. Fans of FC Minyor Pernik, dressed in black and yellow, gather at the « Stadium of Peace » to support their team. However, the atmosphere is far from peaceful as fans hurl racist, homophobic, and misogynistic insults at the opposing team. The documentary by Nikolay Stefanov immerses the audience in this world of toxic masculinity and economic struggle, focusing on the story of Tsetso, a middle-aged man with Nazi tattoos influenced by his father’s racism.
The film, « No Place for You in Our Town, » suggests that this cycle of hatred is generational, but lacks historical context beyond propaganda newsreels from the town’s mining past. The documentary’s observational style sometimes veers into glamorization, with scenes of destructive behavior shot in slow motion with a hard-rock soundtrack. Balancing between representation and aestheticization of hate proves to be a challenging task for the filmmaker.
